Ethical Responsibilities for Companies that Process Personal Data

In the second PennAITech webinar of the 2023-24 season, Professor Kathy Bowles, Co-Director of the Aging Pilot Core at the Penn Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory for Healthy Aging, introduced Matt McCoy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. McCoy's presentation focused on the ethical responsibilities of companies handling personal data, a topic of increasing relevance in our AI-driven age. He discussed the current inadequacies in both formal and informal ethical standards surrounding data use and proposed a more robust ethical framework to guide companies. Key takeaways included the need for meaningful consent, the limitations of notice and consent protocols, and the importance of stakeholder engagement in shaping data policies. McCoy's insights provided a comprehensive look at the evolving landscape of data ethics, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and accountability in data management practices.
